What do you guys think I should pay for the AMC? It has no cancer, the body is straight, the interior is minty (minus the steering wheel) and the paint is a little faded but all there. 190k miles, rebuilt engine and trans, newish tires. Its listed at 1800 but I dont plan on paying that.

You could start an offer at $1200, getting to $1500? I doubt you'll get it for less than $1.5-1.6k, since it's running and relatively clean.

Low ball him at $1000 and meet in the middle. I would pay $1500 if everything is okay.

Dude, please listen to a person speaking from experience: Get that car inspected by an independent mechanic. Rebuilt engines are a VERY VERY dangerous thing to get involved in, especially when buying your first car. Edit: rebuilt trans too? Stay away. I know you think this is "the one," but it's a massive risk.
Start at $1000, it's an AMC.

Start lower. $1400 would probably get you to $1650. $1200, then negotiate up to about $1450.

you don't want to pay 1800, why not offer 1900 then...
or start at 1200, I would start at 1400 though, then negotiate up to 1600, I think they may think your not serious if you low ball them at 1200.

do you have cash? then it would be easier to low ball them if you have 100 dollar bills with you. becuase then they would know your serious if you have the cash with you.

I have a blank check. Its sold by a charity with a dealers license, not some random joe. i dont think car buying tactics like that would work. But my family owned a pawn shop, I think I can handle the haggling, its the price I should stop at that I'm having trouble with

"Huh. I was thinking about a thousand..."
In all seriousness, start at like $500 below asking. Even $1800 seems like a reasonable price.

I think Jordaneer has a point here. Who did the rebuild? A reputable shop in the area or some shade tree mech? We all remember the trouble our resident dentist went through with his M3.
The fact that it's a charity is interesting to me. This concept of charities selling used cars doesn't exist over here. Do they have a dedicated car person to do all their car deals, or will you have to deal with whoever is on shift at that point in time? If a car person puts it up for 1.8, they want 1.6 for it, and would wait for another buyer at 1.4. Some random person usually involved with other stuff, might not haggle at all or let it go at 1.0. Who knows?

I dont think I have to worry about the rebuild, The thing runs like a top, I didnt even have to prime the carburetor to start it. If it made some funny sounds I'd worry, but I think Its okay

Well, Batteries car was fine, did a couple hundred miles or so until the engine disintegrated on itself.

13 posts about it later, and you have't even bought it yet. Just buy, and ask questions later.
